How can I place newly uploaded photos before or after existing product media?

If you want to control where newly uploaded images appear in your Shopify product gallery - before or after existing media, use the Adding behavior setting in Apps > PicManager > Settings >  Media assignment:

  1. Select Before existing media if you want new images to appear at the beginning of the product gallery.
Info
Note: Images added before existing media become the new main product image in Shopify.
  1. Select After existing media if you want new images to be added to the end of the product gallery. This keeps your existing media order unchanged.
Additionally, you can set the order of newly uploaded images.

How to set the order of new images

If you upload multiple images for the same product and want to control their order, you can add an order number to your filenames.

But first, go to PicManager’s Settings and specify a Media numbering separator: choose from auto-detect, hash, dash, or underscore.

Then, add the selected separator and an order number to each filename. The numbering starts with 1 and determines the order of the newly uploaded images, not their position in the entire gallery. Before or After Existing Media determines whether new images are placed before or after existing images. For example: toy_1.png, toy_2.png, and toy_3.png will be uploaded in this order.

If a file has no order number, it will be uploaded according to the processing order - the file processed first will be uploaded first. If a number is missing, PicManager simply follows the next available number. For example, with toy_1.png, toy_3.png, and toy_4.png, the images will be uploaded in the order toy_1.png, toy_3.png, toy_4.png.

Info
Note: The upload strategy also affects the final image order. Add to existing media keeps the current images and places the new ones according to the Adding behavior setting. Replace existing media removes the existing images, so the newly uploaded images become the entire gallery.

FAQ

PicManager for Shopify lets you upload and add new images to an existing product gallery without replacing the current images. In PicManager > Settings, set Adding behavior to After existing media - this ensures your newly uploaded images are added after the existing ones, and your featured image won’t be replaced. Then, go to Upload media, select your files, start the upload, and choose Add to existing media gallery as the upload strategy. This ensures your current images won’t be overwritten by the new ones.
With PicManager, you can control the order of images for each product during a bulk upload. In Shopify Admin > PicManager > Settings, select the media numbering separator: hash, dash, underscore or auto-detect. Then, add the selected separator followed by the desired order number to each filename. During the upload, PicManager will upload images and arrange in the specified order. For example: toy_1.png, toy_2.png.
